RENTAL FAQ
How do I start a rental with Lowing Light & Grip and/or Lowing Studios?
If you’re new to Lowing, welcome — we’re glad you found us. Getting started is simple: send us a quote request, email, or give us a call. We’ll help walk you through what’s needed to get your rental moving.
Returning customers can reach out directly with their gear list or project details, and we’ll get your order prepped. For a deeper look at what to expect as a new customer, visit our [New Customer page →].
Do you rent to individuals, or only to production companies?
We rent to productions of all sizes — from a single light or stand to full truck packages. Whether you’re an independent creator, a small team, or a large-scale production, we’re here to support your project and help you get the right tools for the job.
Can I get a quote before confirming my rental?
Absolutely. We’re happy to provide a quote at any stage of your planning process. Just send us your gear list or project details, and we’ll take it from there.
What information should I include when requesting a quote?
Start simple — your name and contact information are perfect first steps. If you already have project dates, locations, or a gear list, that’s even better.
No matter your experience level, we’re here to help guide you through the process. You can also complete our [New Customer Paperwork →] to streamline your first rental.
How far in advance should I reserve my gear?
Whether your project came together overnight or has been planned for weeks, we’re ready to help. Gear can be reserved as early as a few weeks ahead or the same day if needed.
The fastest way to secure your gear is always to call our office directly.
Do you offer package deals for larger productions?
Yes. We have dedicated gear packages designed around project size and scope — from small-scale shoots to full studio builds. We can also customize a package to fit your specific production.
Where do I pick up my rental gear?
Pickups take place at our rental shop at
1500 Whiting St
Wyoming, MI 49509.
Weekend pickups and deliveries can be scheduled with notice — just let us know your timeline and we’ll help coordinate what works best.
What are your hours for pickups and returns?
Standard business hours are 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM.
Pickups are available anytime after 3:00 PM on your scheduled day, and returns are due by 10:00 AM on the day your rental is scheduled back.
If those times don’t fit your schedule, we’re flexible — just reach out, and we’ll work with you to arrange a pickup or return time that fits your production needs.
Can I return gear after hours or on weekends?
Yes. After-hours or weekend returns can be arranged in advance. A $100 shop open fee applies in these instances.
Do I need to check in my gear when returning it?
You don’t need to stay while we check gear back in. As long as you’ve confirmed that all items are returned, our team will handle inspection and restock.
If anything is missing, damaged, or lost, we’ll contact your production team or Producer to help resolve it according to the rental terms and conditions.
Are your lights tested and prepped before pickup?
Always. Our team of experienced lighting technicians tests every fixture before it leaves and again when it returns. Maintaining clean, dependable equipment is one of our top priorities.
Can I add last-minute items to my order?
In most cases, yes. As long as the gear (or a comparable substitute) is available, we’ll add it to your order and get it ready right away.
Do you rent cameras, or just lighting & grip?
We focus on lighting, grip, power, production supplies, location gear, stands, grip trucks, trailers, and tools & equipment.
We do not rent camera bodies or lenses — but we highly recommend our friends at Braincell Camera, located less than a mile away at 1600 Chicago Dr SW, Wyoming, MI. We partner with them often for camera needs.
Do you offer on-set support or technicians?
Yes. We maintain an extensive network of production professionals across all departments. If you need crew recommendations, we can connect you with trusted contacts — or, if preferred, run all crew through Lowing for a nominal administrative fee.
What’s included when I rent a stage at Lowing Studios?
Each stage includes dedicated production support space, tables & chairs, cones, Lowing Products shot bags, power allowance, and a studio manager on site.
Typical add-ons include lighting packages, grip hardware packages, cyc wall packages, overhead softboxes, and à-la-carte gear rentals from Lowing Light & Grip.
Can I bring in my own gear to the studio?
Yes, you can. There’s no additional charge for bringing your own equipment.
That said, we strongly recommend including our stage-specific grip packages — they’re designed around each space and ensure you have the right tools at hand for an efficient, well-supported setup.
Do studio rentals include grip & lighting equipment?
No. Studio day rates cover the stage, power allowance, and a dedicated studio manager.
Grip and lighting packages can be added to any booking, or you can rent à-la-carte gear from Lowing Light & Grip — with an automatic 10% discount when combined with a stage rental.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept cash, check, and credit card.
A 3% processing fee applies to all credit card transactions.
Do you require a deposit?
Most rentals do not require a deposit. However, we reserve the right to request one depending on the nature or size of the order.
What should I do if something stops working on set?
Contact us immediately. We’ll troubleshoot with you and arrange replacement gear as quickly as possible to keep your production moving.
Who should I contact for emergency support?
If you’re on location, reach out the Rentals Manager.
If you’re at the studio, contact the Studio Manager.
If you can’t reach either right away, call our main office line and email info@lowinglight.com so our team can respond promptly.
Do you offer student or non-profit discounts?
Yes. Students receive a per-day rental credit, and we work with non-profits on a case-by-case basis to find a fair rate.
Do you support local productions or educational programs?
Absolutely. If you have an idea or program in mind, reach out — we’re always looking for ways to support the local production community.
We also welcome anyone interested in learning about gear to schedule a hands-on appointment with our team.
Can I tour your facility before renting?
Yes. We encourage it — contact us to schedule a time that works for your team.
INSURANCE FAQ
Do I need insurance to rent equipment?
In most cases, yes—especially for larger gear packages or longer rental periods. Insurance protects both your production and our equipment from unexpected loss or damage.
If you don’t have coverage yet, that’s okay. We can walk you through what’s required and point you toward providers who specialize in production rentals. For smaller or one-off projects, we also offer flexible options—just reach out, and we’ll find a solution that fits your needs.
What kind of insurance do I need?
Most rentals fall into one or both categories—equipment or vehicle—and each has its own coverage requirements. These guidelines help protect your production, our gear, and anyone working on or around your set.
For Equipment Rentals (Cameras, Lighting, Grip)
- Equipment Coverage: $1,000,000
- Third-Party Property Damage Liability: $1,000,000
- Commercial General Liability: $2,000,000
- Lowing Light & Grip listed as Additional Insured and Loss Payee
- Workers Compensation and Employers Liability, if applicable
For Vehicle Rentals
- Physical Damage Coverage for Rented Vehicles: $125,000 per truck
- Non-Owned and Hired Auto Liability: $1,000,000
- Lowing Light & Grip listed as Loss Payee
These coverage levels reflect industry standards and ensure your policy meets both our requirements and those of other vendors you may be working with.
Every production is different—if your coverage doesn’t quite match these guidelines, reach out. We’re happy to help you navigate your options and find a path forward that keeps your project protected and moving.
How do I show you that I have the right insurance?
Your insurance provider can issue a Certificate of Insurance (COI)—usually on a standard ACORD form—that lists your coverage and limits. That’s all we need.
When your provider prepares the certificate, please make sure it lists:
Lowing Light & Grip, Inc.
1500 Whiting Street SW
Wyoming, MI 49509
as both the Additional Insured and Loss Payee.
If your insurance agent has questions about formatting or requirements, we’re happy to help. We can provide a sample certificate or connect directly with your provider to make the process simple and quick.
Does my insurance coverage expire?
Yes—insurance certificates do expire, and keeping them current helps prevent delays when booking rentals.
We track expiration dates in our system, and your rental forms will note the month and year we have on file. If that field is blank, out of date, or marked as Required or Pending, we’ll need an updated Certificate of Insurance before releasing any equipment or vehicles.
If you’re unsure whether your coverage is still valid, just reach out—we’re happy to double-check and help you update it if needed.
What if my current insurance doesn’t meet your requirements?
Absolutely. Every production is a little different, and it’s common for coverage to vary from one policy to another.
If you’re unsure whether your insurance meets our requirements, just reach out—we’re happy to review your Certificate of Insurance and walk through what’s needed. We can also provide a sample COI, explain the key coverage types, and connect you with providers who specialize in production insurance.
Our goal is to make the process easy and help you get set up quickly, so you can focus on what really matters—your shoot.
Where can I get insurance?
If you already have a business or homeowner’s policy, start by checking with your current insurance provider—they may be able to add coverage for rented gear or vehicles.
If not, no problem. We can connect you with insurance providers who specialize in film and production coverage and understand what’s required for rental equipment and vehicles. You can also ask other crew members or producers for recommendations—many already work with trusted agencies familiar with the industry.
If you’re unsure where to start, reach out. We’re happy to point you in the right direction and help make the process simple.
Do you have an example of a certificate of insurance?
Yes. We can provide a sample Certificate of Insurance (COI) to help guide your insurance provider. It clearly outlines the required coverage levels and how Lowing Light & Grip should be listed as both the Additional Insured and Loss Payee.
If your provider needs clarification or help filling it out, we’re happy to connect directly with them to make sure everything is set up correctly before your rental.
Can I use my rental outside of Michigan or out of the country?
Yes—our equipment and vehicles can travel, but we’ll need to confirm a few details before they leave the state or country.
For out-of-state rentals, make sure your insurance policy covers use outside Michigan and that Lowing Light & Grip remains listed as both the Loss Payee and Additional Insured.
For international rentals, additional paperwork and customs documentation are required. We’ll help you coordinate what’s needed—typically through a U.S. Customs Broker or ATA Carnet—so your gear can clear customs and return safely.
If you’re planning to travel with your rental, just let us know early in the process. We’ll help ensure everything is properly documented, insured, and ready for a smooth trip.
What happens if something is damaged, lost, or stolen?
If anything is damaged, lost, or stolen during your rental, let us know right away. We’ll walk you through the next steps and help you file the appropriate reports or insurance claims.
Your insurance coverage is designed to protect against these situations, whether it’s accidental damage on set or equipment that doesn’t make it back. Once we’ve reviewed the incident together, we’ll determine if repair or replacement is needed and work with your provider to handle it as smoothly as possible.
Prompt communication helps us minimize downtime, manage repairs efficiently, and keep everyone protected—so the sooner we know, the faster we can help.
GRIP TRUCK FAQ
What is a Grip Truck?
A grip truck functions as a mobile toolbox and storage unit for a film crew’s grip and electric (G&E) departments. It carries stands, clamps, rigging hardware, flags, frames, sandbags, cables, carts, and other tools used to shape, mount, and control lighting on set.
What's included with a grip truck rental package?
Each of our grip trucks comes pre-loaded with a dedicated Grip Package tailored to its size — 1-Ton, 3-Ton, or 5-Ton. These packages include a well-balanced selection of grip, rigging, and support gear organized for fast, efficient use on set.
You can view detailed load sheets for each truck by clicking the product images above or visiting the individual truck’s product page.
Any additional lighting, camera, or specialty gear can be added à la carte to customize your setup for the specific needs of your production.
Who can drive a Grip Truck?
Any properly licensed and insured driver can operate our grip trucks—no CDL required. We do, however, require a valid medical DOT card for anyone driving our vehicles.
If you’d prefer not to handle driving yourself, our team can connect you with qualified drivers or experienced G&E crew who know our trucks and gear inside and out. We can also help coordinate delivery or pickup logistics to make sure your truck is where it needs to be, when it needs to be there.
Can I hire a driver or G&E crew through Lowing Light & Grip?
Yes. Lowing Light & Grip can provide qualified drivers and experienced grip & electric crew to support your production. Our team includes working professionals who know our trucks, gear, and on-set workflows inside and out—ensuring your shoot runs smoothly from load-in to wrap.
Whether you need a dedicated driver, a best boy, or a full G&E crew, we can help connect you with trusted professionals suited to your project’s scale and schedule.
Can I put other Department gear in a grip truck?
Yes—so long as it fits safely alongside the grip and electric package, you’re welcome to load camera or production gear onto the truck.
We frequently coordinate with local vendors like Braincell Camera, who can deliver camera packages directly to our rental facility for convenient loading before pickup. Our team is happy to help ensure everything fits securely and travels safely with the rest of your equipment.
Is Lighting included?
Every production has its own lighting style, scale, and power requirements, and we want you to have exactly what fits your project best. Due to these reasons, items like Lighting and power distribution aren’t included with our grip truck packages.
Each truck comes fully stocked with a complete grip package—stands, rigging, flags, frames, and all the tools for shaping and supporting light. From there, lighting fixtures and distro gear can be rented separately to build out the setup that works for you.
Our team is happy to help you select the right combination of lights and power equipment for your shoot.
What do I need before I can rent a truck?
Before renting a grip truck from Lowing Light & Grip, you’ll need to provide a few key documents:
- A valid U.S. driver’s license
- A medical DOT card (required to drive any of our trucks)
- A Certificate of Insurance (COI) that meets our vehicle coverage requirements
Your insurance certificate should include rented vehicle coverage, non-owned and hired auto liability, and list Lowing Light & Grip, Inc. as both the Loss Payee and Additional Insured.
If you’re new to vehicle rentals or not sure what coverage you need, we’re happy to help. Our team can walk you through the requirements, provide sample COIs, and even recommend trusted insurance providers who specialize in film and production coverage.
Once we’ve received your documentation and confirmed your booking, your truck will be prepped, inspected, and ready to roll.
